1   태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라
(NIV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2   땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고 하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시니라

(NIV) Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

*formless 형태가 없는 form 형태, 형체/ empty 텅 빈, 공허한/ darkness 어둠, 암흑/ over ∼의 위에/ surface 표면, 겉/ deep 깊음, 깊은/ Spirit 성령, 정신/ God 하나님/ hover (over) ­(∼위로) 선회하다, 맴돌다/ waters 강, 바다, 호수 <참고> waters는 복수가 되면서 뜻이 달라지는 단어 (예) arm(팔), arms(무기)

(NKJ) The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

*without ∼이 없는 void 텅빈, 공허한, 빈 곳/ face (땅, 물건 등의) 표면, 얼굴

 

3   하나님이 이르시되 빛이 있으라 하시니 빛이 있었고
(NIV) And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

*God 하나님/ light 빛

**Let there be～이 있게 하라 * 사역동사+목적어+동사의 형식으로 “∼으로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻이며 여기서는 목적어 부분에 there를 써서 “∼이 있게 하라”의 뜻. (There is/are ∼이 있다)  

(NKJ) Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light

 

4 빛이 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라 하나님이 빛과 어둠을 나누사
(NIV) God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

*God 하나님/ light 빛/ separate A from B: A와 B를 격리하다 seperation 격리/ darkness 어둠, 암흑

(NKJ) And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness

*divide 나누다, 쪼개다 division 나눔, 분할  

 

5 하나님이 빛을 낮이라 부르시고 어둠을 밤이라 부르시니라 저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이는 첫째 날이니라
(NIV) God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning -- the first day.

*God 하나님/ call 부르다/ day 낮, 날/ darkness 어둠, 암흑

(NKJ) God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

 

6 하나님이 이르시되 물 가운데에 궁창이 있어 물과 물로 나뉘라 하시고

** 궁창: ①먼지, 구름 ② 높고 푸른 하늘 히브리적 우주관에 따르면 세상은 하늘과 땅, 바다로 이루어져 있으며 궁창은 하늘과 동일시된다. (기독교낱말큰사전 P.118- 한국문서선교회)
(NIV) And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water."

*expanse 광활한 공간(장소), 확장/ between ∼ 사이에/ )/ waters 강, 바다, 호수, <참고> waters는 복수가 되면서 뜻이 달라지는 단어 (예) arm(팔), arms(무기)/ separate A from B: A와 B를 격리하다 seperation 격리

**Let there be～이 있게 하라 * 사역동사+목적어+동사의 형식으로 “∼으로 하여금 ∼ 하게 하라”의 뜻이며 여기서는 목적어 부분에 there를 써서 “∼이 있게 하라”의 뜻. (There is/are ∼이 있다

(NKJ) Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”

* firmament 궁창, 하늘/ in the midst of: ～의 한 가운데/ divide 나누다, 쪼개다 division  

 

7 하나님이 궁창을 만드사 궁창 아래의 물과 궁창 위의 물로 나뉘게 하시니 그대로 되니라

(NIV) So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.

*expanse 광활한 공간(장소), 확장/ separate A from B: A와 B를 격리하다 seperation 격리/ above ∼의 위에

(NKJ) Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.

*thus 이(그)와 같이, 그렇게/ firmament 궁창, 하늘 / divide 나누다, 쪼개다 division/ divide A from B: A를 B로부터 나누다/ waters 강, 바다, 호수 <참고> waters는 복수가 되면서 뜻이 달라지는 단어 (예) arm(팔), arms(무기)

**the waters which～ under the firmament가 A, the waters which～ above the firmament가 B에 해당된다 <참고> divide A into B는 ‘A를 나누어 B로 만들다’의 뜻이다. the waters which were 부분에서는 관계대명사 which 이하가 the waters를 수식하며, the waters로 되어 있어서 be 동사로 were로 복수형을 쓴 것에 유의해야 한다.

 

8 하나님이 궁창을 하늘이라 부르시니라 저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이는 둘째 날이니라

(NIV) God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning--the second day.

(NKJ) And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.

* firmament 궁창, 하늘/ Heaven 하늘, 천국 heavenly 천국의

 

9 하나님이 이르시되 천하의 물이 한 곳으로 모이고 뭍이 드러나라 하시니 그대로 되니라
(NIV) And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so.

*God 하나님/ sky 하늘/ gather 모으다, 모이다/ place 장소/ dry 마른, 건조한/ ground 지면, 땅/ appear 나타나다, 출현하다 appearance 출현

**Let the water under the sky be는 “～로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻으로 사역동사+목적어+동사 구문이다. 여기서는 the water under the sky가 목적어에 해당된다. 아래 부분 let dry gound appear도 같은 형식을 가진 문장이다. 그리고 be gathered는 수동태 형식으로 “모여지다”의 의미이다.

(NKJ) Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.

*Then 그때에/ God 하나님/ said say(말하다)의 과거(분사)/ heaven 하늘, 천국 heavenly 천국의/ together 함께/ be gathered into one place 한 군데로 모여지다

 

10 하나님이 뭍을 땅이라 부르시고 모인 물을 바다라 부르시니 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라
(NIV) God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.

*God 하나님/ call 부르다/ dry 메마른, 건조한/ ground 지면, 땅 land 땅, 토지, 뭍/ gathered 모여진, gather 모으다, 모이다/ saw see (보다)의 과거

**the gathered waters he called “seas” 부분은 he called the gathered waters "seas"에 대한 도치구문이며, gathered는 과거분사로 형용사처럼 쓰여 waters를 수식한다./ 

(NKJ) And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

*Earth 땅, 대지/ gathering 모인(모은) 것/ together 함께

**the gathering 이하는 He called the gathering together of the waters Seas에 대한 도치구문이다.

 

11   하나님이 이르시되 땅은 풀과 씨 맺는 채소와 각기 종류대로 씨 가진 열매 맺는 나무를 내라 하시니 그대로 되어

(NIV) Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so.

*Then 그때에 / God 하나님/ land 땅, 토지, 뭍/ produce 생산하다 production  생산 / vegetation 채소/ seed-bearing 씨 맺는 seed 씨앗/ plant 식물, 심다/ bear 낳다/ fruit 열매/  according to ～에 따라서/ various 여러가지의/ kind 종류

**Trees on the land를 관계대명사 that 이하 in it까지가 수식하며 with seed in it의 it는 fruit를 가리킨다

(NKJ) Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.

*bring forth 싹을 내다, 열매를 맺다/  grass 풀/  herb 목초, 풀/ yield (농산물 등을) 산출하다, 내다/ earth 땅, 지구

**Let the earth bring forth 이하는 “～로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻을 가진 사역동사+목적어(the earth)+동사(bring forth) 구문이다/ the herb tha yields 부분은 관계대명사 that 이하가 선행사 the herb를 수식하며 바로 다음에 the fruit tree that yields 이하도 같은 형식이다/ whose seed is in itself, 부분은 삽입구로 관계대명사 whose 이하가 앞의 fruit를 수식한다

 

12   땅이 풀과 각기 종류대로 씨 맺는 채소와 각기 종류대로 씨 가진 열매 맺는 나무를 내니 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라

(NIV) The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

*land 땅, 토지, 뭍/ produce 생산하다 production  생산 / vegetation 채소/ plant 식물, 심다/ bear 열매 맺다/ / fruit 열매, 과일/ seed 씨앗/ according to ～에 따라서/ kind 종류/ God 하나님/ saw see(보다)의 과거    

**plants bearing 이하, trees bearing 이하에서 bearing은 각각 현재분사로 plants와 trees를 수식하여 “씨 맺는 채소, “ “열매 맺는 나무”의 의미를 가진다/ God saw that 이하는 접속사 that 이하가 saw의 목적어절로 쓰인 문장이다

(NKJ) And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

*earth 땅, 지구/ brought bring(가져오다)의 과거(분사)/ bring forth 싹을 내다, 열매를 맺다/ grass 풀/  herb 목초, 풀/ yield (농산물 등을) 산출하다, 내다

**the herb tha yields 부분은 관계대명사 that 이하가 선행사 the herb를 수식하며 바로 다음에 the tree that yields 이하도 같은 형식이다/ whose seed is in itself, 부분은 삽입구로 관계대명사 whose 이하가 앞의 fruit를 수식한다.

 

13   저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이는 셋째 날이니라
(NIV) And there was evening, and there was morning--the third day.

**there was (is)+주어는 “∼이 있다”의 의미이다

(NKJ) So the evening and the morning were the third day.

 

14   하나님이 이르시되 하늘의 궁창에 광명체들이 있어 낮과 밤을 나뉘게 하고 그것들로 징조와 계절과 날과 해를 이루게 하라

(NIV) And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years,

16   하나님이 두 큰 광명체를 만드사 큰 광명체로 낮을 주관하게 하시고 작은 광명체로 밤을 주관하게 하시며 또 별들을 만드시고
(NIV) God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

(NKJ) Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also.

(NKJ)  God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth,

18   낮과 밤을 주관하게 하시고 빛과 어둠을 나뉘게 하시니 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라

19   저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이는 넷째 날이니라
(NIV) And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day.

20   하나님이 이르시되 물들은 생물을 번성하게 하라 땅 위 하늘의 궁창에는 새가 날으라 하시고

** 궁창: ①먼지, 구름 ② 높고 푸른 하늘 히브리적 우주관에 따르면 세상은 하늘과 땅, 바다로 이루어져 있으며 궁창은 하늘과 동일시된다. (기독교낱말큰사전 P.118- 한국문서선교회)

(NIV) And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."

* teem with ～으로 충만하다/ living 살아있는/creature 피조물 create 창조하다/bird 새, 조류/ fly 날다/ above ∼의 위에 / earth 지구, 땅/ across (어떤 지역·범위에) 걸쳐서, 가로질러/ expanse 광활한 공간(장소), 확장 / sky 하늘

**let the water teem, let birds fly 부분은 Let the water teem은 “～로 하여금 ∼하게  하라”의 뜻으로 사역동사+목적어+동사 구문이다

(NKJ) Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living [e ]creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.”

21   하나님이 큰 바다 짐승들과 물에서 번성하여 움직이는 모든 생물을 그 종류대로, 날개 있는 모든 새를 그 종류대로 창조하시니 하나님이 보시기에 좋았더라
(NIV) So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

* create 창조하다 creature 피조물/ great 거대한, 큰/ every 모든, 매/ living 살아있는/ moving 움직이는/ thing 생물, 물건/ teem with ～으로 충만하다/ according to ～에 따라서/ kind 종류/ winged 날개 달린

** 선행사 every living and moving thing을 관계대명사 with which 이하가 수식하며 이 부분은 every living and moving thing which the water teems with로 쓸 수도 있다

(NKJ) So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

22   하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시며 이르시되 생육하고 번성하여 여러 바닷물에 충만하라 새들도 땅에 번성하라 하시니라
(NIV) God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth."

* bless 축복하다 blessing/ fruitful 열매 맺는 ↔ fruitless / increase in number 수를 늘리다 ↔ decrease / fill/ 채우다 충만하게 하다/ earth 땅, 지구

** Be fruitful～ fill 이하는 동사원형으로 시작하는 명령문이다/ Let the bird increase 이하는 “～로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻으로 사역동사+목적어+동사 구문이다

(NKJ) And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

* multiply 증가하다, 번식하다

** saying 이하는 분사구문(부대상황)으로 and said 정도의 뜻이다

 

23   저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이는 다섯째 날이니라
(NIV) And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day.

(NKJ) So the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

 

24   하나님이 이르시되 땅은 생물을 그 종류대로 내되 가축과 기는 것과 땅의 짐승을 종류대로 내라 하시니 그대로 되니라
(NIV) And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.

* land 땅, 토지, 뭍/ produce 생산하다 production  생산/ according to ～에 따라서/ kind 종류 / livestock 가축/ creature 피조물 create 창조하다/ move 움직이다/ along ～을 따라, 쭉 ground 지면, 땅/ wild 야생의, 거친 / animal 동물/ each 각자, 각각

** Let the land produce 이하는 “～로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻으로 사역동사+목적어+동사 구문이다/ : (콜론)은 부가적인 설명이나 여러 가지를 나열할 때 쓰는 문장부호이다/ 선행사 creatures를 관계대명사 that 이하 내용이 수식한다

(NIV) God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

* wild 야생의, 거친 / animal 동물/ according to ～에 따라서/  kind 종류/ livestock 가축/ creature 피조물 create 창조하다/ move 움직이다 along ～을 따라

** 선행사 all the creatures를 관계대명사 that 이하가 수식한다

(NKJ) And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

26   하나님이 이르시되 우리의 형상을 따라 우리의 모양대로 우리가 사람을 만들고 그들로 바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 가축과 온 땅과 땅에 기는 모든 것을 다스리게 하자 하시고
(NIV) Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

* Then 그 때에, 그 후에/ image 형상, 형체 in one’s image ∼의 형상대로, ∼를 본떠서 / likeness 외관, 초상 in one’s likeness 의 형상대로/ rule over ∼를 지배하다/ fish 물고기/ bird 새, 조류/ air 공중, 공기/ livestock 가축/ creature 피조물 creation 창조/ move 움직이다/ along ∼을 따라, 쭉/ ground 지면, 땅      

** Let us make 이하는 일반적으로 “～로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻으로 사역동사+목적어+동사 구문이다. 여기서는 특별히 Let us로 이어져서 “∼하자”의 뜻이다/ over the livestock, over all the earth, over all the creatures 등은 앞 부분의 rule over에 연결되어 “∼를 지배하다”의 의미가 반복된다/ 관계대명사 that 이하가 all the creatures를 수식한다 all the로 이어지는 어순에 유의해야 한다

(NKJ) Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

* dominion 지배 dominate 지배하다 have dominion over ∼을 지배하다/ cattle 가축, 소(무리)/ creeping 기어다니는 creep 기다

** Let them make 이하는 “～로 하여금 ∼하게 하라”의 뜻으로 사역동사+목적어+동사 구문이다./ 선행사 every creeping thing을 관계대명사 that 이하가 수식한다. Every는 3인칭 단수로 표현해야 하기 때문에 every creeping thing에 맞춰서 creeps로 표현한 점에 유의해야한다.

 

27   하나님이 자기 형상 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고
(NIV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
